HIDDEN TREASURES: KRAVICE WATERFALLS

The Kravice waterfalls site is a popular place for Bosnians to relax, swim and picnic. It’s one of the most beautiful natural sites around Mostar. Especially if you know the best time to visit the area. Did you know you can have the falls all to yourself?

We like to travel around Europe in our Volkswagen van, wildcamping as much as we can. (We only stay overnight at a campground or bed and breakfast when my hair gets really greasy. Welcome to the smelly van!) On our way from Dubrovnik to Mostar, we also wanted to hit the Kravice waterfalls (formerly known as Kravica waterfalls). Since it was already late in the evening, we decided to camp near the nature park. When we got there after closing time, to our surprise we could drive all the way to the parking lot near the falls.

The area was completely deserted. During the night we had the beautiful site all to ourselves. Johannes took the above photo in pitch darkness, with a very long shutter speed. Hence the high kitschiness of the photo. (Love it.) We laughed that this is a photo to display in a light box of a Chinese restaurant. Yeah, you can picture it.

The next day remained quiet until noon. You can eat something on site, swim or hike. What a contrast to Plitvice in Croatia, where in high season you’re queuing from waterfall to waterfall, waiting until the tourist hordes have all taken their selfies.

The site of the Kravica waterfalls is open to visits from May until October. Pets are allowed in the area.
